Villa Pedestrian Gates
In the daily life of a home, the villa pedestrian gate is opened far more often than the driveway gate. When it is made with the same section, the same infill spacing and the same paint batch as the driveway gate, the entrance reads as a single design.

02Definition
What is a villa pedestrian gate, and where is it used?
A pedestrian gate is a single-leaf metal gate that closes the opening left in the garden wall for people to pass through. It is not a scaled-down driveway gate: because it is opened and closed far more often every day, its hinges, lock and closing mechanism work under a different kind of load. That is why the number and type of hinges are assessed not only by the weight of the leaf but also by how often the gate is used.
Pedestrian gates are used on villas, detached houses, garden entrances in residential complexes and the side entrances of small businesses. Deliveries, guests, children, the gardener — all of the day-to-day traffic passes through this gate. So a gate that opens easily, closes on its own and has a lock that does not stick matters more than how it looks.
The most common mistake at a villa entrance is ordering the pedestrian gate at a different time, and from a different supplier, than the driveway gate. When the two gates sit side by side, the slat thicknesses differ, the spacing does not line up, and even with the same RAL code, the shade drifts apart because the paint comes from different batches. When the two are made from the same series, the line continues without a break.
03Types
Types of pedestrian gates
On a pedestrian gate, the opening type is fixed; the differences come from the style of the infill and the level of hardware.
Matching series gate (paired with the driveway gate)
It is made with the same slat section, the same spacing and the same paint batch as the driveway gate. When the two gates are placed side by side, the infill line continues without a break. This is our default choice for projects where the villa entrance should look like one whole.
Wrought iron pedestrian gate
On classic facades, the forged motifs of the driveway gate are redrawn in proportion to the width of the leaf. The motif is not simply scaled down; forged detail that has been shrunk looks cramped and crowded. The top arch is kept to the same radius as on the driveway gate.
Minimal gate
The frame section is slimmed down, concealed hinges are chosen and the lock is recessed into the body. From the outside, only vertical lines and a slim frame are visible. The handle can also be made as a recessed channel worked into the leaf’s own profile.
Fully equipped gate (with intercom)
For an electric lock, video intercom and remote opening, the frame post is fabricated with cable channels from the start. The gate can be set up to open from inside the home, from your phone or from the same remote control as the driveway gate.
By infill type
Horizontal slats give privacy and are the style that matches a driveway gate most easily; vertical bars look light and airy; composite panel adds the warmth of wood; forged iron speaks the same language as the architecture on classic facades.

05Technical
Materials and technical specifications
These values are commonly used ranges; the final choice is made for each project according to leaf size, infill weight and intensity of use.
| Frame and leaf | Box section; section size chosen according to leaf weight |
|---|---|
| Wall thickness | Usually in the 1.5–2.5 mm range |
| Hinges | Adjustable type; can be adjusted on site. Concealed hinges optional |
| Lock | Mortise lock; replaceable cylinder. Compatible with electric locks |
| Opening | Single leaf, inward or outward — depending on the width of the sidewalk |
| Surface treatment | Sandblasting + primer + electrostatic powder coating |
| Hardware preparation | Concealed cable channel inside the frame post |
| Size | Made to measure — there is no catalog of standard sizes |
06Measurements
Measurement and planning
Measurement tolerances on a pedestrian gate are tighter than on a driveway gate; because the leaf is small, even a deviation of a few millimeters leads to rubbing. For this reason, checking the wall for plumb and measuring the opening at three points (bottom, middle and top) is our standard practice.
Whether the gate opens inward or outward is decided by the width of the sidewalk and the level difference in front of the gate. A gate that opens outward onto a narrow sidewalk gets in the way of pedestrians; a gate that opens inward can scrape the ground where the garden side slopes.
Measuring the opening at three points
The bottom, middle and top widths are taken separately. Any difference between them is compensated for when the frame is fabricated; if it is not measured, the gate will bind at some point.
Wall plumb
If the wall is not plumb, the frame is fabricated with an allowance for it. This allowance is critical, especially on minimal gates with concealed hinges.
Level difference and threshold
The gap under the gate determines both water drainage and the gate’s free movement. A gap that is too narrow leads to rubbing once the ground settles.
Electrical preparation
If an intercom or electric lock is being considered, the power supply line and push-button cable are planned before fabrication, and the frame post is made with a cable channel.
07Hardware
Locks, intercom and accessories
On a pedestrian gate, automation means a layer of locking and communication, not a motor.
Electric lock
A button pressed inside the home or on your phone retracts the lock latch. The strike, recessed into the frame, is fitted during fabrication.
Video intercom
A flat mounting surface is left on the frame for the camera panel. The cables run inside the post, so no conduit is visible on the outside.
Mechanical backup
The mechanical cylinder is always retained so that the gate can be opened from outside with a key during a power outage. An entrance gate that relies on electric opening alone will leave you locked out when the power goes.
Door closer
It makes the gate close on its own, slowly. It is a frequent choice for gardens with children, because it keeps the gate from being left open.
Mailbox and house number
These are mounted on the frame or the side wall, not on the leaf; add-ons on the leaf work loose over time as it opens and closes.
08Process
From site survey to handover
Every job goes through the same seven steps. When one of them is skipped, the problem usually shows up not during installation but at the end of the first year.
- 01
Site survey
Measurements are taken on site; we see the opening, level differences, ground conditions and any existing structure. The dimensions on paper almost never match those on site exactly.
- 02
Design and drawings
A technical drawing is prepared from the measurements. Infill divisions, profile sections and any automation layout are finalized at this stage.
- 03
Approval
The drawing and the color and material choices are approved in writing. Because a change after approval means reversing fabrication, this step is not rushed.
- 04
Fabrication
Cutting, bending and welding are done in our workshop in Arnavutköy. Weld seams are ground flush with the surface.
- 05
Surface treatment
The surface is prepared by sandblasting and primed, then electrostatic powder coating is applied. For parts that will stay outdoors, galvanizing comes into play.
- 06
Installation
On site, the work is anchored, aligned and, if needed, welded in place. If there is automation, the electrical connection and photocell adjustment are completed the same day.
- 07
Handover
Operation is checked, and use and maintenance are explained. Remote controls are programmed, locks are handed over and any phone app is set up at this stage.
09Price
What determines the price?
Although a pedestrian gate is smaller than a driveway gate, the level of hardware changes the price noticeably. The factors that affect the quote:
Leaf size
Width and height; the section grows, especially on tall leaves.
Infill choice
Forged iron and laser-cut patterns require much more labor than plain slats.
Hinge and lock class
Concealed hinges and multi-point locks are separate items from standard hardware.
Electrical hardware
The electric lock, video intercom and door closer are each priced separately.
Matching series
Making it at the same time as the driveway gate is usually more efficient than making the two at separate times.
Installation conditions
If wall reinforcement or running a power line is needed, the scope grows.
10Maintenance
Maintenance and service life
Because a pedestrian gate is used so often, its maintenance also differs from that of a driveway gate: the most important task is lubricating the hinges once a year and checking their adjustment. If the wall settles over time and the gate starts to rub, adjustable hinges allow this to be corrected on site.
The lock cylinder is affected by dust and moisture; cleaning it once a year with a graphite-based lubricant keeps the key from sticking. Oil-based sprays should not be used, because they draw dust inside. The painted surface is washed with fresh water; in locations exposed to the sea, washing should be more frequent.
11FAQ
Frequently asked questions about Villa Pedestrian Gates
Should I have the pedestrian gate made at the same time as the driveway gate?
It is not required, but when they are made at the same time, the same profile section, the same infill spacing and the same paint batch can be used. On a gate added later, there may be a difference in shade caused by a different batch, even if the same RAL code is used.
Should the gate open inward or outward?
The width of the sidewalk and the level difference in front of the gate decide. On a narrow sidewalk, a gate that opens outward gets in the way of pedestrians; if the garden side slopes, a gate that opens inward can scrape the ground. We assess both together during the site survey.
If I have an electric lock fitted, what happens during a power outage?
The mechanical cylinder is retained in every installation; during an outage, you open the gate with a key. We do not think it right to leave an entrance gate relying on electric opening alone.
What can be done if the gate starts to rub over time?
With adjustable hinges, this is corrected on site; there is no need to take the gate down. Rubbing is usually caused by the wall settling or the ground heaving, not by the gate itself.
Can an intercom be added to my existing pedestrian gate?
In most cases, yes, but if the frame was not made with a cable channel, the cable either runs along the outside in a conduit or the frame has to be drilled. Both affect the appearance and the weathertightness; that is why we recommend planning it at the fabrication stage.
Can we put the mailbox on the gate?
Technically it is possible, but we do not recommend it. Add-ons on the leaf take vibration every time it opens and closes, and they work loose over time. Mounted on the frame or the side wall, they do not have this problem.
I have a child and want the gate to close on its own.
A door closer (hydraulic arm) does this, and the closing speed can be adjusted. Because it needs reinforcement at the top of the frame, it is best to specify it at the fabrication stage.
